As publisher of Outside Magazine, I've had the opportunity to take many adventure trips in my life. But, only when my youngest child turned 6 did I begin to search for the ultimate family adventure experience. My wife and I had the usual parental questions: Was it safe? Was the trip kid friendly? Would it be a learning experience as well as fun? And of course we had the usual comfort and food questions. For 6 days and 5 nights my family and I were treated to an adventure that was a life changing experience. The spectacular Salmon River itself was a thrilling white water adventure for all. Mackay gave us three options for river travel: float raft, paddle raft, or inflatable kayak. This allowed family members to challenge themselves and be part of the paddling experience or simply sit back and enjoy the ride and breathtaking scenery.

As is the case in most adventure travel, the guides make or break the trip. The Mackay staff is second to none. Their incredible river skills and knowledge, amazing work ethic, and great sense of humor and fun was all anchored by their supreme passion for their jobs and the environment they work in. They made you feel special everyday because they feel blessed to be on this river themselves.

A unique feature to Mackay is the Kid Wrangler. Mackay assigns a trained professional (school teachers) to each family trip to entertain and educate the kids. This guidance greatly enhanced the trip for the kids, not to mention giving mom and dad some time to themselves. Our kids, along with the other kids on the trip were kept busy with crafts, games, educational hikes and learning camping and water skills. They shared in an experience they will remember for years to come.

Last, but no least, every outfitter these days claims to have gourmet cuisine on their trips. With Mackay it is a reality. From prime rib and garlic mashed potatoes to grilled salmon and chicken picata, our guides (chefs) presented an incredible feast for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For my finicky kids the cooks always seemed to prepare a dish that kept them happy and coming back for more.
